  • The Cabbage Soup Diet left me starving, and desperate to cheat all the time. The 8 pounds I lost in my first week were replaced with a 5 pound weight gain the week I stopped doing it.
  • Even low fat diets, like Pritikin, Onish and the Hip And Thigh Diet didn’t make much of a difference to my weight. The meals were tasteless and unsatisfying, and simply didn’t work!

I could go on and on about the diets I’ve tried. The failures. The heartache. But that would take you days to read! To make a long story short, practically everything I tried – restricting my calories, meal replacement bars and shakes, prescribed and over the counter diet pills – they worked for a few weeks then stopped working, or didn’t work at all.

Exercise was a struggle too. Most of the time I was too tired to go out and jog. Not only was I often short of breath, but I breathed heavily… even when sitting still. And I had no social life, either. I used to dress up to go out then not want to leave the house when I saw how fat I looked in my clothes. Meeting new people was nerve wracking because I’d always worry about what they thought of me. I used to dread walking past a group of people because I just knew they would be laughing at me.

I hated going to work. I worked in an office full of women who were slim and very body conscious. They’d talk about their exotic diets (which they didn’t need to go on), glittering social lives and the exciting men they dated. I would sit at my computer, pretending to be busy at work, but I’d secretly hang on to every word of their conversations, wishing I was attractive, slim and cool like them.

I knew they laughed at me behind my back, but I still wanted to be one of them. I used to dream about the day they’d invite me out for drinks with them after work, and go to the bars and nightclubs that they went to. But I knew it would never happen as long as I was fat and dumpy.

The Day That Changed My Life

One morning at work, I was sitting at my desk, and felt my chest getting tighter and tighter like it was being squeezed into a ball. My heart was beating fast and I started to shake. I couldn’t breathe! I thought I was dying of a heart attack! The pain got so bad I fell off my chair, landed smack on the floor, and the buttons on my shirt flew off, exposing my too-tight bra and oversized stomach, which no one had seen before.

I was gasping for air and clutching my chest. I felt like a beached whale, but I didn’t care. “I was going to die!” Soon a crowd formed around me. It was so humiliating! They were just standing there open-mouthed, looking at me in horror.

None of the women in my office could pick me up, I was too heavy. I had to lie there shaking, sweating and struggling for breath, for over 20 minutes until the paramedics came. Even though they were two big men, they had difficulty picking me up.

That’s not exactly what you want to hear when you think you’re going to die!

At the hospital, the Doctor gave me a very stern talking to. She explained that I had only had a panic attack, but warned me that if I didn’t do anything about my weight problem right now, I could well be wheeled here with a heart attack the next time.

I told her through tears that I was doing everything I could to lose weight, and told her about all the diet meals I was eating, the pills and the shakes I had been taking and how long I had been searching for a way to get slim.

“Those foods are junk” She snapped. “They give you little nutrition and leave you hungry. No wonder you’re not losing weight. You need to eat real food.”

The Doctor explained to me that I had been depriving myself of the nutrients I needed to lose weight. She said that I needed to get rid of that “Frankenstein food” and stop punishing myself.

That comment just set me off. I cried so hard I hyperventilated. She didn’t understand, I told her. I was stuck at this weight and it was killing me!

She must have taken pity on me, lying there, snivelling, and clutching what was left of my ripped shirt. She looked around to make sure that no one was listening and said…
